Life Skills Dog Training

I  normally work in groups of 4 sessions, although single behavior  evaluations are also available.  In the 4 session dog training package, the first  session entails a behavior consultation in the privacy of your own home. It includes an extensive interview that lasts from an hour and a half to two hours. All  follow up sessions are also private training lessons in your home that  last from 45 to 60 minutes (or more if there are multiple dogs). All packages include design of an appropriate behavior modification/training program. Four Paws, Four Directions  provides free training and educational handouts that are appropriate  for each session.  In addition, I offer up to an hour of free follow-up  telephone or video consulting after the training sessions are finished  All  skills and behaviors can be taught with or without a clicker (my  preference would be with a clicker), but all use positive reinforcement  as a force free method. For separation anxiety consulting packages and fees, please see the relevant page on this website.

The  life skills and behaviors listed below are descriptive but not  prescriptive.  They give you a general idea of the appropriate skills  that puppies and dogs should have, but it can be changed to accommodate  the issues of each individual dog.
I give a 10% discount on all rates for those who adopt animals from the Tompkins County SPCA or the Cortland Community SPCA.

Feisty Fido (for dogs with aggressive or reactive behavior issues)
I  use a combination of counter-conditioning, desensitization, and Touch  Associated Clicker Training (T.A.C.T.®) and cognitive behavioral therapy  techniques to help dogs learn to be calm  both on and off leash and to  focus on you even during very arousing circumstances (e.g., the approach  of another dog, child or strange adult human).  Even dogs with bite  histories will benefit from this training!  If you have ever been  discouraged about making progress with your reactive or aggressive dog,  please give me a call.  Although no one can guarantee that your dog  won't ever bite, lunge, or growl again, my techniques have proven to  help even the most habitual problem behaviors.
